FAQ – Battery, Charging and Battery Life

How do I charge the Gibi device?

Connect Gibi charging cradle to USB cable, then either (1) plug into USB port of a computer or (2) connect the A/C adapter, then plug into a wall outlet.  Slide Gibi device into charging cradle with the light grey arrow on top towards the USB cable connection.  When you hear the click and the button light lights up, it is all the way in and charging.  See video below on how to charge the Gibi device.  It is recommended to only use Gibi supplied components for the charging kit.  Also see FAQ on Device for information on the button light indicator.

Where can I get another charger kit?

Gibi charger kits are available for purchase at getgibi.com/shop.

What is the device battery life?

Battery life is 2-3 days for common usage, where the Gibi is set to locate at every 15 minutes. Battery life will be reduced if the device is mostly indoors and if the location Check-In rate is set to less than 15 minutes. The reduction varies depending on the building construction and the blockage it causes with receiving GPS signals. The shorter the location Check-In rate (less than 15 minutes), the shorter the battery life. The longer the location Check-In rate (more than 15 minutes), the longer the battery life, but the formula is not linear.  Battery life is similar to using your mobile phone more or less often.  When you talk lots on your mobile phone, the battery does not last long.  We recommend setting the Check-In rate to no longer than every 1 hour to keep a pulse on device status.

What type of battery does Gibi use?

Gibi uses LithiumPolymer batteries.  If you just got your Gibi and it is new, new Lithium-Polymer batteries take a few cycles of charging and discharging before it will perform with full capacity.

How long does it take to charge the battery?

The battery fully charges from empty to full within 2 hours.

Why doesn’t my battery last long?

See above on device battery life.  Is your dog mostly indoors?  What is the location Check-In rate set at? Is the device new? If you just got your Gibi and it is new, new Lithium-Polymer batteries take a few cycles of charging and discharging before it will perform with full capacity. When the battery is low and needs charging, low battery alerts are provided. Charge your Gibi when you receive a low battery alert.

Can the battery be replaced?

Gibi device batteries cannot be replaced.  Contact Gibi Support if you have questions.

Can I use another USB cable or A/C power adapter?

It is recommended to only use the USB cable and A/C power adapter provided by Gibi.  Other cables or adapters may not be rated to provided the required current and may damage the battery.  Gibi charger kits are available for purchase at the Gibi Online Store.

Can I leave my Gibi in the charger after it is fully charged?

It is recommended to not leave your Gibi device in the charger for very long after it is fully charged as it shortens battery life. This is similar to electronics with rechargeable batteries.
